Physical therapy after amputation: half the road to independence

We often tell our patients: the prosthetic limb is half the road, and physical therapy is the other half. The body has to learn again how to balance and move with the new limb.

What does the program include?

  • Strengthening: especially the core, hips and residual limb.
  • Balance training: standing steadily and sharing weight between both legs.
  • Gait training: first between parallel bars, then with support, then independently.
  • Joint flexibility: to prevent stiffness that makes using the limb harder.
  • Everyday skills: stairs, sitting and standing, walking on uneven ground.

A trauma-informed approach

Many of our patients lost a limb because of war or disaster. Our therapists design tailored, trauma-informed programs that move forward in small steps and build confidence gradually.

The family’s role

We encourage families to join sessions and learn the home exercises, because keeping up the exercises at home speeds up recovery.
